(20) Wild Card

This past week two time MVP Shohei Ohtani signed the biggest contract in baseball history. The former Los Angeles Angels star moved down the street to the in-city rival Los Angeles Dodgers. He signed for 10 years $700 million, which is $300 million more than the 2nd highest paid player in the league, Mike Trout who signed for 12 years $426. The contract is absolutely insane, the fact that Ohtani has only been in the league for 3 years now and signed the biggest contract in history, it’s legendary.

Shohei’s contract was deferred which means that for the next 10 years while Ohtani is on contract he will be paid $2 million a year. From 2034-2043 Ohtani will be paid the rest of the $680 million left on his contract. The reason this is so important is because this allows the Dodgers to still be able to have cap room to go get other free agents or make trades later in the season. The Dodgers who are already a powerhouse in the league are sitting in the driver's seat for some big market off-season moves this winter.

If the contract doesn’t speak enough for the type of worth Shohei Ohtani relly has here are just some things he has been able to achieve in his short career. Ohtani has already won 2 MVPs and this past year won the Male Athlete Award at the ESPYs. Ohtani is also a two-way player which makes him even more valuable, this means that Ohtani pitches and hits. The last player to do this was Babe Ruth, and not only that but his stats show he’s doing it better than Ruth. Back to back years Ohtani has finished top 5 in the Cy Young award (Given to Best Pitcher) and the Silver Slugger award (Best Hitter at their Position). So Ohtani’s value is worth the price of two players since he can hit and pitch.
