Saturday the state of Tennessee went on a Tornado watch. After only a few hours of being on watch, disaster happened. The whole state of Tennessee was in danger 13 different tornadoes touched down after officials confirmed Sunday afternoon after the disaster. One of the estimated 13 tornados traveled nearly 43 miles from the Clarksville area in Montgomery County to Logan County .  Anyone in the Middle Tennessee area was in danger, one can only imagine the feelings these people had while hiding from a natural disaster waiting to happen. Officials said 6 people died Saturday night in Clarksville as well as a  total of 83 people had to be transported to the hospital- 62 of those from Clarksville and 21 from the Nashville area. Sadly of those 83 nine of them were in critical condition and had to be transported to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.           This past week two time MVP Shohei Ohtani signed the biggest contract in baseball history. The former Los Angeles Angels star moved down the street to the in-city rival Los Angeles Dodgers. He signed for 10 years $700 million, which is $300 million more than the 2nd highest paid player in the league, Mike Trout who signed for 12 years $426. The contract is absolutely insane, the fact that Ohtani has only been in the league for 3 years now and signed the biggest contract in history, it’s legendary.                                     Shohei’s contract was deferred which means that for the next 10 years while Ohtani is on contract he will be paid $2 million a year. From 2034-2043 Ohtani will be paid the rest of the $680 million left on his contract. The reason this is so important is because this allows the Dodgers to still be able to have c...

(19) Classmate Blog Critique

Throughout his blog you get to learn lots of different things like pop culture, crime, and sports. Stetson Bishop throughout the year was the one blog I continuously found myself going back to. Whether I needed to get an idea or just to see if something new had been posted.  The layout of Stetson's blog made it very easy to scroll through and find new things or ideas. Coming in as a new student to the class I wasn't quite sure how to go about getting my own blog started. Stetson was helpful enough to show me a few pointers to help improve my own blog. Because of this I was able to start my blog by using similar ideas to his blog.  Some of the topics that I thought I'd find myself not particularly interested in. Stetson found a way to make it interesting, like the numeracy blog where he brought in the statistics about the voting for Rookie of the Year in the MLB.

(18) News App Critique

Image
The app 18Birdies is an app that does multiple different things like being a GPS on the course to show how far away you are from the hole to help you choose the right club. It also becomes a scorecard for you and saves all your previous scores and gives you an average handicap after each round. Being able to know your handicap helps give a player the ability to know how many mulligans you’re able to take in tournaments if able. It also shows what you average each round so if your handicap is an 8 that means you average 8 shots over par when playing. The best and last feature about this app is the shot tracker. This gives you the ability to take video of your swing no matter where you are and it will give you feedback on what is wrong with your swing.

This year the Florida State Seminoles had an astounding record of 13-0. Sadly two weeks before the playoffs Jordan Travis the star quarterback suffered a broken leg in a game against North Alabama, on November 18 ending his season. Florida State would go on to win their next game against in-state rival the Florida Gators with backup quarterback Tate Rodemaker. However their final game was the ACC championship against the 14th ranked Louisville Cardinals. This time with third string quarterback Brock Glenn, they would find a way to rally and win a very close 16-6 game making Florida State the ACC champions. Glenn however showed very little to give people confidence Florida State was still a top four team without their star quarterback Jordan Travis.  The new ranking came out stating that Florida State has dropped to number five overall and number eight Alabama and seven Texas into the top four since Georgia lost this past week as well. The Seminoles are the first Power-5 undefeate...

After the Arkansas Razorbacks finished their football season people knew something needed to change with the coaching staff. Not sure where to start though, head coach Sam Pittman really hadn't done bad since only being there for two years with a record of 16-10. Recently some concern has come since the Razorbacks turned to former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino to come back as offensive coordinator.  Bobby was a great coach at Arkansas and it has seemed as if the team has gone downhill since he was fired in 2012. As some know Petrino was caught having an affair on his wife with a younger lady after he wrecked his motorcycle with her on the back. The story was much more though, it went national and was all over the news after finding out he also had some “character issues.” Since this happened he has said that he has come to realize these problems and has been coping with them.            I believe that Petin...

For months Young Thug has been at trial fighting against his case after being charged with racketeering. He was 1 of 28 charged with this, with conspiracy to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations law, or RICO, with some accused of murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and other crimes.   The rapper's chances of winning this case seem to become less likely as time goes on. Recently a judge ruled that the rapper's own lyrics will be allowed to be used against him and his collaborators in court. Recently one of Thug's own artists that was signed under the YSL records had come out and admitted he pleaded guilty. This left many questions to the public, Gunna was known as one of Thug’s best rappers as well as one of his longtime friends. The rapper has since been let go for obvious reasons from YSL and has only done a few shows since finishing his own trial.  On the other hand it doesn't look like things are going to end anytime soon for Young Thu...

On Wednesday November 1 the Texas Rangers broke their 63 year drought of never winning a World Series. It came after sweeping back to back rounds of the wild card series against the Tampa Bay Rays and then the Baltimore Orioles in the ALDS. They then took on their in-state rival the Houston Astros and beat them in a game 7 to advance to the World Series where they would face off against a young and speedy Arizona Diamondback.  The D-Backs came in as one of the hottest teams heading into the postseason. But the lack of experience seemed to be a factor as the Texas Rangers veteran pitching staff kept the D-Backs offense quiet almost the whole series. The Rangers led by Corey Seager and Nathan Eovaldi would dominate both sides of the ball and would end up only losing 1 game in the short 5 game series. The Texas Rangers showed pure dominance throughout the playoffs and it seemed to never slow down. The Rangers would end up winning their 1st World Series on November 1st after a l...

On Saturday the Ghana international footballer Raphael Dwamena collapsed on the pitch and later passed away. Although no details have come out about what caused him to collapse the video shows him falling around the 24th minute of the match. Players from both teams immediately rushed to his side before the medical staff was able to get him carted off. The team came out with a statement saying “ we would like to express our sincere condolences to our former player.” https://www.cnn.com/2023/11/11/sport/raphael-dwamena-dies-after-collapsing-spt-intl/index.html

(12) Numeracy

Numeracy Being able to understand what you are doing and how to work with numbers is all Numeracy. Basic math and sometimes higher level math like algebra or statistics is needed to be understood depending on what you are trying to calculate. Everyday math is used in some type of way throughout the world.  For me specifically I use math when I'm in season for baseball. As a pitcher my goal is to keep a sub 3.00 earned run average which means in a nine inning baseball game I would only give up 3 runs to the other team on average. Another example is a hitter to be considered a good hitter in the MLB you have a .300 batting average. That means in ten at bats on average you get a hit three times and get out the other seven. Kind of crazy to think if you only fail 70% of the time in baseball you're considered a good hitter.  Currently right now the NFL is starting to get to the back end of the season meaning someone has to be crowned MVP. The reason that players' stats are...

(11) Civics

Image
Civics is the study or science of the privileges and obligations of citizens. Things like all three branches, how bills become laws and what the electoral college is. The reason for learning these things is to inform students to contribute to public processes. Such as voting, volunteering, jury service, and finding other ways to help improve the community.  The three branches of government are separated to make sure no branch has more power than the others. It helps make sure citizens rights are protected giving each branch its own priority and responsibilities. The balance of power helps give each branch the ability to work with each other without any conflict.  The first branch is the legislative which makes laws, the branch is composed of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Second is the Executive Branch which is made up of the President, Vice-President, the Cabinet, and any federal agency. Lastly is the Judicial Branch, they evaluate each law. The Judicial is ma...

(10) Listening Post

A listening post is news that informs you about a certain topic whether or not you intended to hear it. News can be anything whether it's sports, crime, or just the weather for the week. You can receive news through radio, TV, or just word of mouth from someone else.  I'm From Austin, Texas so when I’m here at SAU I receive news from my parents about things that are happening back home. For example, two weeks ago my parents were telling me about the ACL music festival. The Festival is a two weekend festival Friday through Sunday. Around 50 different artists come and perform the whole day for about an hour each. All the artists are from different genres. So each day you can get a different vibe. Another way I receive news is from the baseball team. Since everyone here is from different cities and states I get to hear about things going on with their own hometowns.  Listening posts are important to keep people updated with what's going on in the world around them. Without t...

Early on Thursday morning safety Ronnie Caldwell was shot on University Parkway. Nobody has ben arrested yet for the shooting but the Police department did say they have a person of interest. The game this Saturday has been canceled so the team may take their time to mourn the death of their teammate.  Ronnie was a Tyler Junior College transfer that had yet to play this year due to an injury. He started 10 out of the 11 games he appeared in and had a voice that could be heard all around the locker room, "well respected" by his teammates and coaches.      This week the university decided that the school would cancel the rest of the season. Many players on the team are upset about the decision. Quarterback Tyler Vander Waal stated " They didn't consider the players in this decision and failed us as athletes." in a lengthy post on social media.  https://www.foxnews.com/sports/northwestern-state-quarterback-lashes-out-school-canceli...

A fire broke out early Monday afternoon and was contained by 4:30 pm that evening at an under-construction home in Rollingwood, Texas. The Austin fire department was the first on the scene around 2 o'clock that afternoon. Chief David Wilson said a few minutes later the fire was " through the roof " and the house was engulfed in flames. More than 100 customers were affected by the power outage it caused throughout the neighborhood. After about an hour and a half or so the power did finally come back on around 5:45. https://www.kxan.com/news/local/austin/afd-responding-to-fully-involved-2-story-structure-fire-in-rollingwood/ https://cbsaustin.com/news/local/crews-working-to-extinguish-fire-at-2-story-house-under-construction-in-sw-austin
